Summary[edit]

Description Close-up of the west counterweights of the Steel Bridge, in Portland, Oregon, fully lowered – down to the roadway deck – during a full raising of the lift span. The four narrow slabs closest to the camera are for the lower deck (which can be raised without raising the upper deck), and the larger counterweight next to them is for raising the combined upper and lower decks. The east counterweights are visible in the left background (within the east tower), as is one of the two glass spires of the Oregon Convention Center. Each of the two counterweights weighs between 800 and 900 tons. This view is from the north sidewalk, looking ENE.
