English: English ship sinks after being torpedoed by a German submarine during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1917 approximate translation. Above; In the middle of the ocean, the last men of a torpedoed ship water slide along the strings. Below: This photograph shows one of the many tragedies of our time. Hit by a torpedo on the bow, the English steamer runs slowly, then faster and faster. The boats have been put in the water and most of the crew was rescued. Only a few men, in danger of being swallowed up, had to escape by throwing himself back into the sea or using rope ladders. To the right, a small steamer comes to the rescue of shipwrecked. The photograph is from a boat carried by one of the crew members who evacuated the ship. Photograph published by the French weekly Le Miroir May 20, 1917. |
