licGarden. This monument ranks • asone of the finest equestrian statuesin the world. About 100 years ago, when Thom-as Ball was a child in Charlestown,he used the same habits and meth-ods of work that we advocate today. That is, he worked from observation and memory, and the following quo-tation tells us of his methods of pro-cedure: My early ship building, for whichI had a great passion, afforded mean immense deal of practice whichI am confident educated my eye formy future profession. My methodof working necessarily obliged meto retain what my eye had seen. 1would go down to the wharf andattentively study ships, beginningwith the graceful lines of the hull;then hurry home and work awayon my little model, renewing myimpressions day by day, sometimestwo or three times a day, by jour-neys to the wharf, and so carryingthe comparative size and position ofthe masts, spars, ropes, one or twoat a time, home to my work, untilthe whole was complete from stemto stern and from keel to topmast.
