Summary[edit]

Description
English: This sculpture was created by internationally known Puerto Rican sculptor José Buscaglia Guillermeti. It represents Dr. Ramón Emeterio Betances, a Puerto Rican patriot born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico on April 4, 1827. Having been the principal leader of El Grito de Lares, the insurrection against Spanish colonialism, he is known as the Father of the Puerto Rican Nation. Betances was a medical doctor/surgeon having received his degree in Paris, a diplomat, a poet and novelist, and a leader in the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico. He vehemently opposed the imposition of colonialism from Spain and from the United States. Betances died in exile in France September 16, 1898.
