Summary[edit]
DescriptionStateLibQld 1 110508 Hydaspe (ship).jpg |
English: The French sail-steamer Hydaspe ran aground on 24 November 1864, on the Pan Shoal in the Rhio Strait, 25 miles from Singapore. Within three days Hydaspe became a wreck, but the crew, passengers and part of the cargo were saved. The sketch pictured, showing the ship's position on the reef, is by J.L. Kirby, Lloyd's surveyor in Singapore. Hydaspe's pumps were still working while she was being lightened by the removal of her cargo and stores. The 'tonkoons', or Singapore boats, employed for the purpose of removing the cargo, are being towed by the Dutch steamer Dassoon, pictured at extreme right. Leven and Rifleman are nearer Hydaspe on the same side. The large vessel on the left is the Dutch Apeldoorn, behind which is the yacht Picciola. The land is 12 miles off. (Information from: London Illustrated, 21 January, 1865) (From description supplied with photograph). |
