DescriptionStamp 1987 GDR MiNr3065 pm B002a.jpg |
Stamp of the German Democratic Republic; 1987; commemorative stamp of the issue "Historical Monuments – Rolands"; issue of 4 stamps; The depicted stamp is GDR Michel No. 3065 from 1987 and shows a „Roland statue“ from Brandenburg an der Havel, created in 1474 (district free town in the country of Brandenburg, Germany) and demonted in the WWII (and stored on a secure place) in order to secure this statue before the bomb- and artillery-attacks of the Allies.; Later, this statue was erected again on an other locatation.; The depicted "Roland Statue" goes back to the "Count of the Breton Mark" (= border land) and paladin of "Charles the Great" (= "Carolus Magnus") which is described in early mediaval times by the "Song of Roland" (German: "Rolandslied", original name of Roland: "Hroutland").; A such column is showing an allegorical figure of a knight with sword stylized to a column, often depicted with grotesk facial features, symbolizing the representance for the "rights of a town" of a location.; A such "Roland statue" was a copy of the old-Germanian "Ziu-Columns" from "pagan times" before which was spoken law by the old Germanians.; This stamp was postmarked with an one-circle first-day special cancellation with 35.0 mm diameter from 1085 Berlin, showing a mediaval shield and sword as central motive over an inscription in Gothic letters. date QS:P,+1950-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P580,+1987-01-20T00:00:00Z/11,P582,+1990-10-02T00:00:00Z/11 Stamp size (printed area of a single stamp without frame with year line): 21.5 x 39.0 mm |
