Summary[edit]

Description
English: Stag beetle (Lucanus servus) These fearsome looking creatures, Britain's largest insects, are actually relatively harmless. This male would hardly give a nip. Its "antlers" are used for fighting other males for the right to mate with a female which, although smaller and without antlers, has a more powerful bite. This one is about 50mm long, quite large, the scale being judged by the tip of an adjacent clothes peg. Stag beetles are relatively rare. They are only found in this form between May and August, having come out of their larva phase and seem to be confined to the south and east of Britain. They thrive in areas of dead wood in woodland and parks. There is a website here http://www.ptes.org/index.php?cat=58 that gives a lot of detail about their life cycle and where you can report a sighting, as I have done with this one. This is in a domestic garden.
