| Description |
English: St Peter and St Leonard, Horbury. The elegant tower of the church designed by John Carr in 1791-93. Grade I listed.
Carr was born in Horbury (and was buried in a vault under the church) and paid for the building. It cost £8,000, but Carr died a rich man, the fruits of a long career as a respected and successful architect. The success of the tower is largely down to Carr's skilful handling of the transition between the different stages. (See also 1452647.) |
