English: St Marys Church. St Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, London, SE16, near to Stepney, Tower Hamlets, Great Britain.
There has been a church on this site since 1300, present one built 1715 and raised to prevent flooding. Some little known facts :- 1282 Abbott of Westminster took out a law suit against the Rector of Rotherhithe re duties required on fish taken from the Thames : 1715 Roman bricks found on site of the old church : 1747 agreement reached to install a peal of 8 bells not to exceed 200 : 1855 burials no longer allowed in the grounds unless under special circumstances : 1878 burials ceased altogether : 1970 some organ pipes vandalised : 1979 ancient bye law resurrected when it appeared that the London Dockland Development Board were to build close to the church i.e. no building is to be taller than the church spire as it is a navigational aid to those on the Thames : 1980 (March) painting of Charles I, presented by Charles II, stolen from inside the church. Replaced by a photographic copy : 1980 (14th June)due to a defect in the tower the bells sounded for the last time : 1981 Rev 'Nick' Richards had a chalice and communion plate, given to him by his mother on his ordination, stolen whilst he was preparing for a service. |
