| Description |
English: St Mary's Loch, St. Mary's, Holm, Orkney. This is a small freshwater loch separated from the sea (the more distant piece of water is part of Scapa Flow) by a spit of land. Because of the richness of the marine environment and the freshwater one, it supports a huge variety of bird life.
The picture shows the typical flat farmland of the area, then the loch, then the sea. The lowest part of the line of land in the distance is the No. 1 Churchill Barrier, separating Scapa Flow from the open sea. |
