St Louis Southwestern GE B36-7 7773 at Tucson, Arizona, c. June, 1980. Scanned from an 8x10 photographic print made on Oriental Paper, developed with Zone V chemistry, and printed from a 35 mm Technical Pan negative. The "elephant ears" are actually sound baffles to reduce cooling fan noise. They were removed within a year after delivery. General Electric built 222 B36-7's. SSW 7770-7773 were the first, in January, 1980, and it was October before the next 16 were built for the Santa Fe. Southern picked up six a few months later. A severe recession kept away new orders until Conrail bought sixty in December, 1983. It was another year before the Southern Pacific bought sixteen, followed soon after by 120 for Seaboard System. |
