Summary[edit]

Description
English: St Giles' church. St Giles' church > 869466 - 869487 - 869509 is situated off a rural lane, beside the track > 869461 that leads to the adjoining rectory. Its unbuttressed tower dates from the 13th century; the south porch with a room (parvis) above was added during the 15th century. What remains of the old churchyard cross > 869482 stands beside it. Because of lack of funds the north aisle was taken down in the late 18th century and the lead roof was sold in order to raise the funds required for repairing the rest of the church. The north wall was rebuilt in red brick and the brasses > 869514 and memorials were removed to the nave. In the chancel, the reredos > 869489 is C17 and has painted figures of Moses and Aaron on either side of the altar; presented by the Reverend George Coleby, this piece of local joinery is believed to have come from nearby Gunton. Inset in the east window > 869494 - 869495 is C15 Norwich School glass, assembled here from detached and unconnected portions that had remained in the various other windows of the church. The octagonal font > 869512 with its elaborately carved panels dates from the 15th century also; the font cover is later and dated 1848. On the north nave wall is a panel of needlework which formed part of an altar frontal > 869516 - it was made by Miss Charlotte Coleby (1797-1869, daughter of the Reverend George Coleby), and the border is believed to be considerably older than the rest. (Information taken from 'Notes on the Parish Church of St. Giles' by Bryan Hall). The church is kept locked but a key is available on request.
