It hadgrounded on the concealed reef of rough icewhich stretched up to within a few inches ofthat surface and back of which Saanak hadplaced the bidarka. For an instant the black-and-white body hung, not two yards from theboat, struggling and lashing with all its fiercelength in order to win the deeper water be-yond. Slowly the grim form slid forward andSaanak plunged his stabbing-lance again andagain into the mottled hide, but the killer onlyredoubled its efforts to reach the bidarka.Little by little the vast body wormed its wayacross the rough ice until it seemed as if onemore plunge would send it into the deeperwater beyond, where the bidarka lay.
