  • Image published in Drawing fire : a combat artist at war / Howard Brodie. Los Altos, CA: Portola Press, 1996, p. 23, with the accompanying caption: After a siege of malaria, I was ordered back to duty in the U.S. and then sent to Europe. In Germany I met S/Sgt. Elwin Miller as his company was preparing to attack. There was a MG bullet in his helmet from previous action, for which he received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and British Military Medal.
