Summary[edit]

Description Kiriwina, Trobriand Islands, Papua. November 1943: Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vc No. A58-137, code UP-T (RAF EE835) with No. 79 Squadron RAAF taxiing on the airfield with a 90 gallon auxiliary fuel drop tank, and with an airman on the mainplane to guide the pilot in accordance with No. 73 Wing Standing Orders. "UP-T" was the personal aircraft of 407174 Flight Lieutenant D. H. (David) Hopton, a Flight Commander. Nose art on the port engine cowling depicted the nude figure of a girl with her pants down with the nickname "Down with everything". The Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boat aircraft of the U.S. Navy in the background was used to rescue Allied airmen downed in the Solomon Sea during operations over New Britain from Kiriwina and mainland New Guinea bases, e.g. Dobodura and Port Moresby.
