Summary[edit]

Description
English: Tip of young and dehydrated pendent branch of the peatmoss Sphagnum rubellum

Technical: maximum width of shoot = 0.8mm; stack of 108 images, each 10 microns apart; objective = Olympus LMPlanFl 10x.

Notes: the leaves are largely composed of 'hyalocysts', which are inflated, empty and colourless dead cells used for water-storage. These elongated cells are clearly visible in the image, as are their thickened pale ribs ('fibrils') that provide support to the cells.
