The first great undertaking, after the Revolu-tionary War, was the building of a bridge be-tween Charlestown and Boston. Many personsthought it a foolish project; but th« bridge wasmade and finished, and opened for passengers onthe 17th of June, 1786. Has it been a foolishproject i It had been talked of even in the year1720. The next great undertaking was thisCambridge Bridge, wliere we are going over,without thinking of the difficulties there were toovercome when it was built; and supposing ithad been always there, — always, since ive havebeen living! There was a causeway commencedthe loth of July, 1792, and the bridge was fin-ished and open for passengers on the 23d ofNovember, 1793. They afterwards told me that the Old SouthBridge was opened for passengers in the summerof 1805, and Craigies Bridge in the summer of1809.
