Summary[edit]

Description
English: A visual simulation of speciation. Colored dots represent individual species. Black connecting lines represent a mate pair that results in zero or more offspring. Explanation of each generation (real speciation happens in thousands of generations):

Generation 1 and 2 - a single species population with random mating
Generation 3 - a single species population with random mating experiencing a geographic barrier (blue dots)
Generation 4 - a full geographic barrier separates a species (grey block)
Generation 5 - Genetic changes occur in the right-side population as gene flow is restricted by the barrier
Generation 6 and 7 - The right-side population begins to change substantially (green dots); representing allopatric speciation
Generation 8 - The geographic barrier subsides allowing the incipient species population to mate; representing secondary contact
Generation 9 - matings occur forming hybrids
Generation 10 - hybrids are selected against in that they are unable to produce viable offspring; representing reinforcement
Generation 11 - the new reproductively isolated species (green and blue dots) mate with less frequency
Generation 12 - hybrids are eliminated as both species expand their distribution

Generation 13 - the species exist in sympatry; unable to mate and produce offspring, they are two separate species
