Description
English: After the opening of its ports, Joseon promoted measures to enrich and strengthen the country. As part of the plan, 80 sturdy volunteers from the Five Army Garrisons were chosen to become part of the Palace Guards Garrison (Muwiyeong). This new unit, the Special Skills Force known as Gyoryeonbyeongdae or Waepyeolgi, was Korea's first modern military unit.
