Summary[edit]
DescriptionSovereign's pew, Canongate Kirk - geograph.org.uk - 1344064.jpg |
English: Sovereign's pew, Canongate Kirk The Queen is the Head of the Church of England, but, like other worshippers, a mere member of the Kirk when in Scotland. She occupies this pew when visiting her local church during annual residences at Holyrood Palace. Relations between the Presbyterian Kirk and the Sovereign have been stormy in the past to the point of war. John Knox's successor, Andrew Melville, summed up the relationship when he tried to put King James VI in his place. He grabbed him by the sleeve, saying,
"Sir, as divers tymes befor, sa now again, I maun tell ye, ye are God's sillie vassal; thair are twa kings and twa kingdomes in Scotland: thair is King James, the heid of the commonweal; and thair is Chryst Jesus, and his kingdome the Kirk, whase subject James the Saxt is, and of whase kingdom nocht a king, nor a lord, nor a heid, but a member." Hardly surprising, then, that James was glad to get out of Scotland when he succeeded Elizabeth I of England to become the first sovereign of the United Kingdom. |
