Re-enactment of the first operation under anesthesia (ether). The actual operation took place on October 16, 1846; this re-enactment took place shortly afterwards. Daguerrotype by the famed en:Southworth & Hawes partnership of Boston. Alas this image is not as good as many of their surviving works. This image is from the Library of Congress online collection, with information given below, and has long since passed into the public domain.
