Summary[edit]

Description
English: A detour on my way to Las Vegas to finish 2012.

My travels earlier in 2012 had taken me to Boeing's widebody assembly plant in Everett, Washington, where new airplanes are born; now I am at a place where the Everett planes come to retire and die.

A large number of newly retired aircraft are visible - at least half a dozen Qantas 747s (two of which are visible here), a pair of KLM MD-11s, a Delta L-1011 that has been out of service for at least a dozen years, two very early United 767s, and more. In the distance are dozens of FedEx aircraft in storage.

Two planes are of note. The Deta DC-10 (UP-DC102), as it turns out, is a DC-10-40D originally built for Japan Airlines in 1980 as JA8546 for Japanese domestic services. In 2001 it was converted to a freighter, and served for Aeroflot before being transferred to Deta of Kazakhstan. And of course, the frontmost 767 is City of Chicago (N606UA), which was the very first Boeing 767 to enter revenue service in September 1982, and flew for United for its entire life until retirement in 2004.
