On August 24, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of southern South Africa.

Description
English: On August 24, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of southern South Africa. South Africa covers more than 470,000 square miles (1,219,090 sq. km) which makes it slightly less than twice the size of Texas. Despite having a long coastline which sits at or near sea level, the rapid rise of the Great Escarpment and the high elevation of the High Veld (also known as the interior plateau) brings the mean elevation of South Africa to about 3,392 feet (1,034 m). The highest point is the peak of Njesuthi (also known as Injesuthi Dome) which sits at about 11,181 feet (3,408 meters). This mountain is located in the steep Drakensburg Mountains near the border with Lesotho. The rugged foldings and rapid elevation gain of the Great Escarpment as it rises from the green coastal region to the interior plateau can be easily appreciated in this image.
