ssible to tell how many have here had their first inspi-ration in life, and how far reaching have been the conse-quences. The reception of the news of Mr. Coopers death showedwhat the world thinks of a good and unselfish man. Peopleof all classes mourned his death. Ministers of all creedspraised him. Thousands paid personal respect to his mem-ory. Courts, city councils, and legislatures adjourned, andbusiness houses were closed on the day of his funeral.Three thousand five hundred students of Cooper Uniondropped flowers on his coffin. TheJife of such a man as Peter Cooper is inspiring.Contrast the life of a man who strives with untiring indus-try to accumulate a fortune to be used in doing good to hisfellow-men with the life of one who accumulates a fortune byquestionable means for selfish purposes and with nothingelse in mind. Mr. Cooper will long be remembered. Hisgood work will continue indefinitely. In no fair sense canhe be said to be dead. T is ever wrong to say a good man dies.

He died atthe age of forty-five, leaving his family well-nigh helpless.Mary was then not quite six years old. The mother was a remarkable woman. She carried on thefarm, supported the children, and kept the family together.Though she worked early and late she was always cheer-ful. There was no money for candy or toys for her littleones, but they always had a beautiful flower garden, whichMrs. Lyon said cost only a littl
