Summary[edit]

Description
English: Soldiers eating, Western Front, during World War I. Soldiers relaxing in the remains of a shelled building. One man is sitting and eating at a salvaged table, while others are scavenging through the wreckage. There are pots and pans on the table, and a tin-can brazier is set on the ground.

For men who had been in the trenches and in battle, even simple things, like sitting at a table to eat, must have seemed luxurious. Experienced soldiers became good at salvaging anything that could, even temporarily, make life more bearable.
