Summary[edit]
DescriptionSolitary rugose coral fossils (New York Subway, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, USA) (24020337498).jpg |
These are fossils protruding from the Mississippian-aged, marine limestone walls of New York Subway, a tubular cave passage in western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave. The fossils are probably silicified - the original calcite skeletons have been replaced by quartz (SiO2). Rugose corals are often nicknamed "horn corals", in reference to the tapered shape of the skeleton. A single, sea anemone-like polyp occupied the top, cup-like portion of each fossil. Many rugosans were solitary, but some formed colonial skeletons. Rugose corals are moderately common components in much of the Paleozoic rock record. Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Rugosa See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugosa |
