Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Soldiers awaiting transport at Kew, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, c 1915. This black and white photograph depicts a group portrait of soldiers on a wharf waiting to embark. The men in the front row are kneeling and two of them have white kit bags. Several soldiers have scarves wrapped around their slouch hats and a flag is being held by the soldier at left. A troopship can be seen behind the group. The reverse of the print has the handwritten inscription `Nestor punch 3' in lead pencil. The inscription refers to the troopship NESTOR which carried Australian troops in WW1.

The soldier kneeling in the front row, far right carries a kit bag reading: 'R. V. Matthews (?) N 6534'. Reginald Vernald Matthews embarked from Melbourne on 2 October 1916 onboard HMAT NESTOR for service with the 5th Battalion AIF.
