Fort Davis is located at the mouth of Nome River at Norton Sound, 4 miles southeast of Nome on the Seward Peninsula. It was a U.S. Army post established in 1900 and named for General Jefferson Columbus Davis, commander of the military district of Alaska in 1867. Much unrest resulted from claim jumping, filing errors, and lack of authority at the outset of the Nome gold rush in 1899 and 1900. The Army was stationed here to maintain order.[Source: Donald Orth.
