Summary[edit]

Description Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, dedicated to Civil War Soldiers, and is located on the Southeast Quadrant of Public Square. Constructed in 1894, the monument was designed by Levi Scofield, a Captain in the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and designer of the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, and is 125-foot black Quincy Granite Shaft erected on a square base building constructed of rough-hewn granite blocks, trimmed in sandstone, that houses a memorial. The shaft is divided by six carved bands, which list the names of battles that Cuyahoga soldiers fought in, and is topped with a bronze statue of the "Goddess of Liberty" signifying loyalty to United States. Inside the memorial building, there are a series of marble tablets that list 9,000 Civil War veterans that served with Cuyahoga County regiments, or were from Cuyahoga County. The structure was restored in 2008, and recently saw its surroundings change greatly, with the Public Square being completely revamped in 2016. The structure remains one of the most notable monuments in Cleveland, and one of the many landmarks of downtown.
