Summary[edit]

Description
English: Social Theatre III by Randy & Berenicci was erected in 1997 and was commissioned for the Spadina LRT Route. It is located at the intersection of Spadina Avenue and Queen Street in Toronto on the eastern streetcar platform atop the southern pole. In his 2010 book, "Creating memory : a guide to outdoor public sculpture in Toronto", John Warkentin states that this piece is the second in the series of six and its three panels depict Spadina’s “artistic, commercial, and cosmopolitan life”. The top panel has four musicians, including a violinist, a guitarist, a cellist, and an accordion player. When seen from Queen St looking north, the bottom left panel shows the image of local shopkeeper Mr. Rotman, owner of Rotman’s Men’s Wear, on a ladder to place a shoebox onto a shelf. On the bottom right panel, appears an image of Bargain Benny’s Pickford Turret; originally the turret was the tower of a theatre at the intersection of Queen and Spadina that was later converted into a bargain store named after Mary Pickford - who was born in Toronto. According to Warkentin, the turret and the store were torn down in 1972.
