Description |
English: Portrait of Mariana Victoria of Spain (1718-1781), fiancée of Louis XV of France, misidentified with Marie Leszczyńska (1703-1768), the first wife of that king. "The portrait of the young Louis XV dressed in the coronation robe and adorned with the collar of the Holy Spirit is based on the one by Hyacinthe Rigaud in Versailles (Fig. 1). The king, aged five, holds his scepter next to the crown placed on his right on a table covered with a flowery cloth. Marie Leszczynska, whom he would marry seven years later, has been portrayed in the same way, with her hand resting on a console on which her crown is placed, but turned to the left. Our painter has emancipated himself from the official model, of which some examples have been attributed to Alexis-Simon Belle or to followers of Carl Van Loo (fig. 2)." [1] |
