After a year or so without a representative foot-ballteam, interest in the gridiron was revived, and C. H. S.decided to put out a team this year. In early September, the candidates elected EdNisbet captain, and Fred Wilson manager. The teamwas fortunate enough to secure the services of Mr. C. F.Cowell as coach. Every fellow was very enthusiastic, andwilling and determined to do his best. Under the carefultraining of Mr. Cowell, some good material was pro-duced. After several weeks of consistent practice on thefield every afternoon, Coach Cowell and Captain Nisbetselected the following for the Varsity: Lineberger, center, Hill, R. G.; Smyly, L. G.; Miller,L. T.; Pyron, R. T.; Young, R. E.; Paterson, L. E.; Wil-son, Quarter; Nesbit, Full; Pharr, Half; Beatty, Half. Substitutes: E. Bumgarner, Dorr, L. Garrison,Dooley and G. Garrison. The first game af the season with the strong team 64

from C. U. S. was played on the Golf Grounds, before agood crowd. The game was hard fought from the firstkick off to the time-keepers final whistle. C. H. S. wonby the score of 8 to 12. The all-round good playing of theC. H. S. team was a noticeable feature. The next game of the C. H. S.-C. U. S. series wasplayed at the Fair Grounds. The University team waseven stronger this time; it had determined to win thisgame, and even up the last score. Although the game wasbitterly fought and was by no means a walkover for theHigh, C. H. S. won by the score of 8 to 0, when Nisbitmade a touchdown, and Pharr a touchback. Interest was now centered on the next game of theschedule, with the Gastonia High School. This fast andheavy team came to Charlotte and met their first defeatat our hands. This was the hardest game C. H. S.played; and was witnessed by the largest crowd that hasever watched *C. H. S. in action. C. H. S. used only end runs and plays and forwardpasses, because the G. H. S. line was
