A spectrograph is an instrument that allows the user to not only deduce the composition of objects, but also their radial velocity (movement toward or away from us.). { THis is due to the Doppler effect - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_shift Light waves "stretch apart", so the time between the arrival of successive wavefronts is increased slightly, giving them a lower frequency - that is they shift to the red part of the spectrum}

Vesto Melvin Slipher used spectroscopy to investigate the rotation periods of planets and the composition of planetary atmospheres. In 1912, he was the first to observe the shift of spectral lines of galaxies, making him the discoverer of galactic redshifts. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesto_Melvin_Slipher

Combining his own measurements of galaxy distances with Vesto Slipher's measurements of the redshifts associated with the galaxies, Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason discovered a rough proportionality of the objects' distances with their redshifts.
