He continued to paint and constantly addedto his power. Some of his strongest works belong tohis last years. Among them are his fine and strongportrait of Martin Luther, and a picture representingKing Henry granting a charter to the company of Bar-ber Surgeons. In 1543 he painted a miniature of him-self, which resembles a portrait painted many yearsbefore at Basle, though in the latter picture the strongchin is covered by a crisp beard. Holbeins engravings and illustrations reveal thethought of the day, which found free expression atBasle.
