Summary[edit]

Description

On October 3 1918, the Anzac Mounted Division completed their campaign in Palestine. During the campaign the Anzac troops captured more than 10,000 prisoners. The Palestinian campaign saw one of the first official uses for the term 'Anzac'. Before the Anzac division was formed the individual brigades which formed the division served in the Gallipoli campaign. The Anzac Mounted Division included the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Light Horse Brigades from Australia and the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. British units from the 1st North Midland Brigade also supported the Anzac troops in Palestine.

The image presented is a panoramic sketch of Waddi-el-Guzze near Shellal showing the site of the Shellal Mosaic (discovered and preserved by the Anzac Division), Palestine from 1917. The sketch was completed by Francis Ledingham McFarlane. McFarlane was added to the War Artists’ Section in October 1918, to record aspects of New Zealand’s involvement in the British campaigns in the Middle East. In many ways it was an odd choice. Although McFarlane had served in the Middle East since early 1916 he was never attached to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade fighting in Sinai and Palestine – he was actually part of a small group of New Zealand signallers sent to Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) and Persia (modern-day Iran).
