Summary[edit]

Description

Interpretive panel at the Sixes River Recreation Site, March 14, 2017, by Greg Shine, BLM.

The Sixes River Recreation Site provides 19 campsites in a forested hideaway along Sixes River. Sixes River is an excellent spot to pan or sluice for gold, and offers enjoyable opportunities for camping, picnicking, fishing, and swimming.

Campsites have picnic tables and fire rings, and access to drinking water, universal access toilets, and site hosts. The site also offers a universal access campsite.

The rivers, streams, and forests that surround Sixes River Recreation Site are home to many different fish and wildlife. Sixes River has a large run of native Chinook salmon and steelhead. Bear, cougar, and bobcats are sometimes seen crossing the road in the early morning and late evening. River otters live along the riverbank and hunt for fish and crayfish. Bald eagles can be seen waiting in the trees hoping to feast on salmon.

Big-leaf maple, oak, and Douglas-fir provide shade for sites at Sixes River Recreation Site. In the spring, look for fawn lilies with their superb colors. While the plants are beautiful ― watch out! Poison oak is common at these sites. Look for its distinctive, often glossy leaves with three leaflets. In the fall it is easy to avoid since the poison oak leaves turn a brilliant red.

Directions To reach the site, travel five miles north Port Orford, Oregon, on US Hwy 101, turn right (east) onto Sixes River Road, and travel approximately 11 miles. When you pass the Edson Creek Recreation Site, you’ll know you’re almost halfway to the Sixes site.
