hn the Baptist, in a series of out-door sermons, wastaking Herod severely to task for his adultery. Herod himselfcared little for the criticism, but Herodias demanded Johnsarrest, and Salome, her daughter, requested and secured hishead. An interesting sequel to this story is to the effect thatSalome married a Roman general, who was afterwards trans-ferred to Spain, and that while skating on the ice of a riverthere, she fell through and her head was severed from her bodyby the sharp edges of the ice. This may or may not be true;it is immaterial now. I stood in the early morning on the pier that juts out intothe lake at Tiberias, in company with several ladies and amonga number of Arabs of both sexes who had been fishing and hadjust brought in the results of their operations. The fish, of auniform size and weight, were dumped on the pier in a pal-pitating mound several feet high. This was the city market,and a brisk business in live fish was being done.
