Summary[edit]

Description

The six-chambered gate complex at the upper entrance to ancient Lachish. The gate has been dated to the 10th century BCE and seems to have been part of a co-ordinated fortification of Israelite cities. Similar gates, with similar dating, have been found at Gezer, Megiddo, and Hazor. Since the Bible describes Solomon fortifying these same cities, this project of fortifying key cities is often attributed to Solomon and his establishing of a centralized royal administration. This gate at Lachish may date slightly later, to Solomon's heirs.
