Text Appearing After Image:
►SIR WALTER BESANT NOVELS WHICH HAVE MADE HISTORY By Sir Walter Besant HiSTOKY is made by the novelist in two ways. Tlie first is bythe presentation of the ideas, laws, manners, customs, religion, pre-judices, and fashions of the time so faithfully that the historian ofthe future can by his help understand the period, and reconstructthe life of that generation. I would instance, as the leadingrepresentatives of this kind of novelist, Defoe, Fielding, andDickens. It would be quite possible, I doubt not, to reconstructa great part of the early eighteenth century without the help ofDefoe: but not the whole. The essayists give us the mannersand the humours of the coffee-house; they also give us an insightinto the mind of scholar, critic, and divine of the period. SwiftsLetters disclose the current talk of. politicians. That mine ofcontemporary manners, The Athenian Oracle, introduces us to thegoverning ideas on religion and morality among the bourgeoisclass. The two worthies, Tom Brown
