e Royal College of Mauri-tius. This position he resigned on account of ill-health, and returned to England. His first work,Studies m Early French Poetry, was produced in1868. Since that time he has been an industriouswriter. In 1873 he brought out The French Hu-morists, and in 1877 Rabelais, for the Ancient andForeign Classics. He was one of the editors of theNew Plutarch Series, ior which, in 1879, he broughtout Coligny, and in 1881 Whittington. For manyyears Mr. Bcsant was the Secretary of the Pal-estine Exploration Fund. In 1871 he wrote, inconjunction with Professor Palmer, a History ofJerusalem. He edited The Survey of AncientPalestine. Fie was also a frequent contributor toperiodical literature. In 1871 he and the late Mr.James Rice entered into a literary partnershipand produced a series of novels bearing theirjoint name. They also put upon the stage twoplays.
