DescriptionSilage - geograph.org.uk - 554916.jpg |
English: Silage, 3 km from Brackletter, Highland, Great Britain. Two types of silage making here, both providing conditions for anaerobic fermentation of grass. At the back are round bales, all individually wrapped to exclude oxygen from the air, while the tyres weigh down a covering of a clamp. Here grass is stored in bulk in a concrete container. Great care is taken to prevent loss of any fluid from silage, it is so rich in plant nutrients that it causes unsustainable algal growth in watercourses and poisons them. |
