Summary[edit]

Description

This beautifully preserved Hoverfly is probably a composite airframe using parts of KK995 and KL110.

‘KK995’ is c/n 94 and was allocated US serial ’43-46558’. It arrived in the UK in late 1944 and flew with the Helicopter Training Flight until February 1946. Later operated with the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment at Beaulieu until April 1947. It was then used as a spares source.

‘KL110’ was allocated US serial ‘43-46596’ before transfer to the UK. Initially flew with the Helicopter Training Flight at RAF Andover. From 1947 it was operated by the King’s Flight carrying mail. In 1949 it was transferred to the Royal Navy and flew with 705 Naval Air Squadron at RANAS Gosport.

During 1951 both of the above helicopters joined the College of Aeronautics (CoA) at Cranfield. In May 1966, a single Hoverfly was offered to UK museums by the CoA and was acquired by RAF Museum. The CoA gave it’s identity as KL110 although during restoration the serial KK995 was found on a number of components, however it’s true identity is still unclear. During restoration at RAF Bicester in 1967 it was painted with the serial ‘KK995’, which it retains today. On display at Hendon since the museum opened, it is currently suspended in the Milestone of Flight Hall, RAF Museum, Hendon, London, UK.
