Description

"After the first XR-5 flights, modifications were made to the basic airframe design that would allow for a variety of roles and missions based on needs, and the designation was the H-5. Some were configured to hold litters on either side of the fuselage, some had auxiliary fuel tanks, some rescue hoists, and others fitted with pontoon floats for over-water duty. It was the first helicopter used by the Air Rescue Service in WW II and was in military service until the mid 1950's [sic] "The civilian version, the S-51, became the first helicopter in commercial use. The airframe on display was used by Lyndon B. Johnson during his campaign for the Texas Senate in 1948"
