Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sign at entrance to Cogworthy Farm in the parish of Yarnscombe in Devon, England. This is the historic "mansion house" of "Cockworthy", in the mediaeval period the seat of the de Cockworthy family. The arms of Cockworthy were: Argent, a chevron (sable?) between three cocks gules (Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.475) and these survive in a stained glass window of Yarnscombe Church, impaled by Affeton (see File:AffetonImpalingCockworthy YarnscombeChurch Devon.PNG). John Cockworthy inherited the manor of Yarnscombe during the reign of King Henry V (1413-1422) (Source:Risdon, Tristram (d.1640), Survey of Devon, 1811 edition, London, 1811, with 1810 Additions, p.319). It was later the home of the Champneys family. Arthur Champneys (c.1658-1724) (born at Cockworthy) of Raleigh House in the parish of Pilton, Devon, and of Love Lane in the City of London, England, was a wealthy merchant and a Member of Parliament for Barnstaple (near Pilton), in Devon, from 1690 to 1705
