Description

Pilot Officer Sidney Wiltshire was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal on 31 January 1930 for pulling his instructor out of a burning plane.

The 19 year old trainee pilot (who would later become a Squadron Leader with the Royal Air Force) crashed his plane near Lincolnshire in England where it immediately went up in flames. Wiltshire escaped but seeing that his instructor, Flying Officer H E Power was trapped, dived back into the flames to drag him clear, sustaining serious burns in so doing. His citation declared: “Power would undoubtedly have lost his life but for the prompt and courageous action taken by his pupil.”

Wiltshire immigrated to New Zealand in 1938 where he joined Union Airways (now Air New Zealand) and he also served with the RNZAF. He had received his medal from King George V at Buckingham Palace back in 1930 and in 1944 he was re-invested with the George Cross by the Governor General in Wellington. He returned to England briefly came back to New Zealand in 1945 and remained here for the rest of his life, dying aged 93.
