image recto: Three studies of No.1 Hospital tent, Camp Konyu 3. Far left shows a man wrapped in a blanket and lying on the floor in a tent, his head swathed in a cloth. Annotated 'malaria'. Far right shows three figures lying on makeshift bamboo beds in the same tent, a bamboo tent pole holding up the canvas. The figure on the left is covered in blankets; the central figure is sitting upright and taking his weight on his left arm. Behind him another lies with his face turned away from the viewer. The lower section shows another man lying wrapped in blankets; to the right of this figure is a sketch of personal effects, including a hat, a bag, a tin mug and two small bottles. image verso: An ink and wash sketch of an Malayan woman in cheong-sam and headscarf carrying a small child on her hip.
