Summary[edit]

Description

c/n SH.984 Built in 1944 as a Mk.III but converted to Mk.V standard before delivery. Saw wartime service with 201sqn and 330(Norwegian)sqn. Stored after the war, it did not take part in the Berlin Airlift. It was then re-engined and overhauled before delivery to the Aeronavale (French Navy) in 1951. When the type was retired in 1961 the aircraft was donated to the ‘Short Sunderland Trust’ for permanent display in the UK. It was flown to Pembroke dock and went on display at the dockyard in June 1962. In 1971 it’s ownership changed to the RAF Museum and the aircraft was dismantled and moved by to Hendon. The fuselage travelled by sea (on a landing craft) to Dagenham and from there by road. It was reassembled in the Grahame-White hangar and went on display outside in 1976. In 1978 in moved in to the newly constructed Battle of Britain Hall where it remains today. RAF Museum, Hendon, London, UK.
