Summary[edit]

Description
English: The "Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground", established 1816, the heart of which is located at 1305 N 5th St., in the city of Richmond, Virginia. It was established for the interment of free people of color and the enslaved. Visible in the photo is the old Talley's Auto Service Center (formerly a Sunoco gas station) at 1305 N 5th St., which is now owned by the city of Richmond. Also visible are a billboard (on the 1305 N 5th St. property), I-64, 5th St, and the 5th Street Viaduct (Curtis Holt Sr. Bridge). All of these things exist on the Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground. This image shows just a small portion of the 31 acre burial ground site. On the far left side of the photo is the eastern wall of the Hebrew Cemetery. The Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground extends to the north behind the Hebrew Cemeteries original one acre plat.
