| Description |
English: Shippersea Bay Looking down into the bay from above I could just make out the shape in the sand in the shadow of the cliffs and knew instantly what it was. Luckily there is a path down, although a little steep and slippery.
The feature in the foreground is a mine ventilation duct probably washed into this bay by the sea and probably stemming from the Dawdon Colliery waste dumped at Blast Beach. Could it be part of the same one featured in the iconic photograph made by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen at Hawthorn Hive in 1999? http://www.amber-online.com/exhibitions/coal-coast/exhibits/hawthorn-hive-afternoon-2-december-1999 Sirkka's photograph is on the cover of her book, 'The Coal Coast'. Somewhere she has described it as resembling a huge shell. I first saw the massive prints of her photographs in her 2003 exhibition at the Baltic in Gateshead and was then inspired to visit this coast for myself. Such remnants of decades of mining are transient features, gradually destroyed by the sea which has been responsible for so much of the clean up of this coast. Although my photo is a poor attempt to replicate Sirkka's, this find made my day. |
