Summary[edit]

Description

A Russian icon of the "Ship of Faith" (Корабль Веры) or "Ship of Salvation" (Корабль спасения) type, late 17th or early 18th century, 64 x 92 cm, State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. The title of the icon reads: "Образ гонения на церковь Божию" ("Image of the persecution of the church of God").

The depiction of the Christian Church as a ship is an old metaphor, but this particular image depicts various heretics surrounding the ship and trying to capsize it. Most of the individual figures are labelled (but the inscriptions are faded and difficult to read). In the ship, Christ is at the helm, steering, Peter and Paul are lifting the anchor, a number of Holy Fathers are surrounding an altar, and four monks are rowing. The Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove hovering above the ship. At the top right, the destination of the ship is depicted as a white city (presumably the New Jerusalem), labelled правоу. To the left is Golgatha and the empty tomb, a crowned woman sitting on a fire-breathing monster, and various heresiarchs attacking on horseback. At the bottom are a number of heretics using hooks trying to capture or capsize the ship. At the bottom right is a turbaned heretic, presumably Mohamed, sitting in the mouth of a fire-breathing monster shooting arrows a the ship, to the right is Luther, firing at the ship with a musket. In an inset bottom left is a scene of two saints or prophets standing before a seated ruler wielding a scimitar [the ruler is possibly wearing a crusader's tunic?]

This appears to be the prototype of an early 19th century Bulgarian icon at Zographou monastery (File:Образъ Стыя нашея Цркве Зограф.JPG)

with a somewhat different arrangement and an "updated" set of heretics, including a dragon labelled "Nea Epokhi" (i.e. "Modernity").

Licensing[edit]

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).

The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
{{PD-Art}} template without license parameter: please specify why the underlying work is public domain in both the source country and the United States
